Rathbone is located in the center of the second tier of town in the southern part of Steuben County on county rt 119.
The first pioneer, William Benham, came to the area of the Canisteo River in 1793. In 1842 General Ransom Rathbone came to the area triggering development and the movement for a separate town. On March 28, 1856 the Town of Rathbone was created by the New York State legislature. There is two hamlets in the Township of Rathbone, Cameron Mills and Rathbone.
